BBC Radio 5 Live's Roddy Forsyth has announced that he is stepping away from his broadcasting career after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

The journalist has been the voice of Scottish football for over 40 years. However, after Scotland's recent 2-0 win over Georgia, Roddy, 69, admitted that his Parkinson's and osteoarthritis battle was making the job "too difficult" to continue.

He stated: "I'm afraid this is the last game I will cover as a Scotland reporter for BBC Sport and that's 42 years after I made my first contribution.

"Sadly for me it's a combination of Parkinson's disease and osteoarthritis that's made it too difficult to continue lugging equipment and sitting outdoors at Scottish grounds in mid-winter for four or five hours."

Roddy also revealed that he would be having match "withdrawal symptoms", and hopes he can "still make some contributions" to Scottish football.

Furthermore, he has assured fans that his illness won't stop him from attending international games.

Roddy has had a fruitful career - having covered four World Cups, three European Championships and five European finals featuring Scottish teams.

Reminiscing on his 42 years with the BBC, the commentator stated that one of his career highlights is being recognised by listeners.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "One of the estimable pleasures of having done this job is the number of times people have said 'hi, I listen'."

"My wife and I were remembering that we were at Glasgow airport, going on our honeymoon, and at the security desk, the man says 'I know who you are... Do a bit of commentary, do Rangers-Leeds, do the winning goal'.

"So, standing at the front of the queue, I did. Then he said 'Right, you can go through now'."

BBC Scotland's sports editor, Tom Connor, has reflected on Roddy's career, hailing the football fanatic as a "brilliant communicator".

He said: "At BBC Scotland, we're grateful for his many radio contributions and also the interviews he conducted so skilfully for the landmark television series, Only A Game. We wish him all the best."

Yesterday, the Scottish football correspondent reflected on his profession in a one-off BBC Radio 5 Live special titled 'Roddy's Game'.

The synopsis for the hour-long show states: "As he announces his retirement, BBC Radio's Scottish football correspondent Roddy Forsyth reflects on more than 40 years covering the sport."

During the farewell, the Glaswegian discussed his World Cup memories, historic Old Firm clashes and how it feels to be part of the Tartan Army.

Roddy's BBC Radio 5 Live special is available to listen to via BBC Sounds.
