Flights from Gatwick Airport were halted this afternoon due to reports of drone activity in the airspace.

According to Flightradar24, inbound flights were being held or diverted away from Gatwick.

The air traffic account tweeted: "Two emergencies (likely low fuel related) diverting to Stansted."

The reason for the halt in operations has not been confirmed by the airport.

One departing passenger, Tarquin Cooper, tweeted: "Are you aware Gatwick is closed due to drone activity. Been sitting on tarmac for last hour."

Many planes are known to have diverted to other airports this afternoon.

On easyJet alone, six arriving flights have been diverted - four to Luton, one to Southend and another to Bristol.

British Airways' arrival from Palma touched down instead at Stansted. The Essex airport was also the unexpected destination for passengers flying on Vueling from Rome, Tui from Kavala and Turkish Airlines from Istanbul.

Departures have since resumed, according to aviation analyst Alex Macheras.

Gatwick airport has not yet issued a statement. The Independent has asked for a response.

In December 2018, during the week before Christmas, around 1,000 flights were cancelled - wrecking the plans of 150,000 travellers.
