Re "Bottoms and taxes up" (May 1): As a person who enjoys alcoholic beverages responsibly, I find the opinion piece by Dan Walters encouraging the raising of taxes on distilled spirits, wine and beer purchased in California ridiculous. He states that California's "personal income tax and sales tax rank near the top."
With that in mind, why do Californians need to pay more for a glass of our famous wine?
Sure, there are costs to the state that stem from alcohol-related causes, but I think educating the public on how to enjoy alcohol responsibly is a better avenue to take than yet another tax hike.
