The Lions extended a tryout invitation to the XFL Special Teams Player of the Year, Darrius Shepherd. While making a significant impact as the St. Louis Battlehawks' return man, Shepherd is also one of the league's top receivers.
In 2023, Shepherd ranks fourth in the league in receptions (48), seventh in receiving yards (519), and tied for second in touchdowns (6). He also averages 24.5 yards per kick return on 37 attempts.
Shepherd, 27, had a cup of coffee with the Green Bay Packers early in his career. After going undrafted in 2019, he spent two seasons in Green Bay and played in 14 career games. Interestingly enough, his first career reception came against the Lions, though it went for just one yard.
Time will tell if Shepherd is able to make a large enough impact to stick around for training camp, but he's certainly worth taking a closer look at.
