Several LIV Golf events have been held on properties bearing the name of former president Donald Trump, Bedminster and Doral each held events during the inaugural season in 2022, and Trump National in Virginia is set to host an event this season.
Trump has been complimentary of LIV CEO Greg Norman, as well as the Saudi government who foots the series' bill.
"I've known these people for a long time in Saudi Arabia, they've been friends of mine for a long time," he said last year. "And frankly what they're doing for golf is so great, what they're doing for the players is so great, the salaries are going to go way up."
The Justice Department is now seeking how deep the ties between Trump and LIV go. According to The New York Times, a subpoena has been issued to the Trump Organization requesting records on the former president's dealings with LIV.
LIV is only one venture under investigation by the Justice Department, which could branch out into other properties or courses owned by Trump.
LIV has come under fire for its Saudi owners, who many have described as attempting to "sportwash" negative events about the country away after holding elaborate and expensive sporting events at home and abroad.
