Sen. Tim Scott took to sports metaphors when asked about the quality of Republican Senate candidates, leading up to the November midterm elections.

"Well, the players are on the field," Scott (R-S.C.) said on "Fox News Sunday." "We're eight weeks away, which is kind of like saying we're in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter. So the truth is, who we have on the field is who we're gonna play."

However, he added to debuting host Shannon Bream: "I'm excited about the candidates that we have overall, because I do think it gives us the chance to win back the majority and return to sanity in Washington."

The remarks came in response to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's comment last month that the Senate is less likely to flip to Republicans than the House, in part due to "candidate quality."

Republican Senate candidates in some key races, including Herschel Walker in Georgia and Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, have struggled to gain momentum in their races. The Senate is now 50-50, so Republicans need a net gain of at least one seat to win the majority.
