A trend for pouring an excessive amount of cleaning product down a toilet has taken hold on TikTok, but a nurse has warned it could have 'dangerous consequences'.
So-called 'toilet overloading' sees users pour a mixture of brightly coloured bleach, toilet cleaner and even washing up liquid in the bowl together to create a frothy rainbow effect.
Videos of such displays can rack up thousands of views, with fans of the trend transfixed by the visually appealing concoctions.
One TikTok user pours a number of cleaning products into the toilet, with the caption: 'Getting rid of a lot of open containers' #toiletoverload #scrubbingasmr #notviral #overload.
Another 'toilet overloader' used bright orange laundry tablets to create a vibrant mixture.
The unusual video trend has found its audience online, with some saying 'Great video!' and 'I'm going to try this!'
Viewers often 'request' toilet overload videos as a form of ASMR. The user will be seen mixing up chemicals to form a clay-like substance and then loading even more products on top.
However others warned of potentially damaging consequences.
One user said: 'This is why all our rivers are polluted.'
Others slammed the videos for being wasteful with people saying: 'That amount of product could have lasted a long time, but hey at least you got TikTok views.'
A London based NHS nurse said there could be 'dangerous consequences' to these toilet overloads.
She said: 'Chemicals mixing like this could have dangerous consequences for people with asthma and respiratory problems, it could also irritate the throat.
'Children shouldn't be exposed to this amount of chemical either - different chemicals will have different reactions when mixed together.
'Cleaning products in general can cause issues.
'In my 30 year career I've seen children come in with allergies because their parents would actually over clean their homes - so you can imagine what this amount of product would do.'
Caroline Forté executive director of Good Housekeeping Institute's home care and cleaning lab said in a Good Housekeeping article: 'Flushing excessive amounts of mixed cleaners down the drain or toilet can damage surfaces and clog plumbing.
'Some of these videos show thick sludges of mixed products that can easily settle in, clog pipes and cause blockages.'
