The Bank of England has clarified that banknotes with the face of Queen Elizabeth II are still valid despite her death, which has led to the accession to the throne of her firstborn and heir, the now King Charles III.

"Current banknotes showing the image of Her Majesty the Queen will remain legal tender," reads a note from the financial regulator, which foresees "further announcements" once the period of mourning is over.

Elizabeth II was the first monarch to appear on banknotes, initially on the £1 note and eight years after she became queen, in 1960. Her face has become widespread over the following decades also in the pockets of British citizens.
