I love writing about things that help make my family's daily life better. I don't know about you, but my hands are dry, cracked and tight by the end of the day because of the amount of hand washing I have gotten into the habit of doing. Below are my favorite hand lotions for dry hands that work and aren't too greasy.

I recently decided to create a wellness section that will include DIY recipes for things like homemade hand sanitizer and other useful and fun projects. I'm also starting a travel recipes section that will share some of my favorite foods I've tried while traveling as well as a few dishes I wasn't able to try because I'm allergic to gluten and wanted to recreate once I got home.

Below is my first article about an issue I'm dealing with now - Overwashed Hands that are dry and chapped!

A simple hand cream, milk bath or using the plastic bag trick can help nourish your hands while you're doing your part to wash your hands often and stop the spread of germs.

Of course, once we get back to traveling, a great hand creme is a must, especially when flying, because of the dryness on planes and of course, from the frequent hand washing.

Tight on cash or in need of immediate relief for your over-washed hands? These five household items help treat dry skin. I've also included a great recipe for a milk bath that is nourishing to hands and the whole body. And, who doesn't deserve to soak in a hot tub right now? It's calming, relaxing and de-stressing.

Treat your hands or your entire body to a nourishing milk bath.

Milk acts as a natural skin softener and is hydrating. Add 1 cup of milk (full-fat or whole milk is best) to a bowl for soaking your hands or 2-3 cups to the bathtub. Fill the bowl or tub with warm water and soak for at least 15 minutes. No need to rinse off after as you want to seal in all that moisture. Dry off and use your favorite moisturizer to seal in with a bottle of natural lotion for a guaranteed soft, silky smooth glow.

Another option for a milk bath is to create a powdered version with some beautiful essential oils for a fragrant soothing bath.

1 cup powdered whole milk

¼ cup Epsom salts

? cup baking soda

10 drops of essential oil such as Ylang Ylang, Vetiver or French Lavender

You can also add a few tablespoons of dried herbs such as lavender

Use  1/4 cup of powdered milk blend in a bowl with warm water for soaking your hands. For a tub soak, use 1/2 - 3/4 cup.

Double or triple the recipe and store it in a glass jar (you can find this on Amazon) to keep on hand.

If you have coconut oil on hand (the kind you cook with), simply take a few tablespoons out and place them in a small jar. If you have essential oils you can add them for fragrance. Simply take a small dab of the oil, and warm it in your hands and then rub it in. A little goes a long way and if you use too much you will be very oily. So, start with a very small dab and add more as needed. It's very nourishing and smells great!

Use about one teaspoon of olive oil and rub it into cuticles and hands.  If you have time, cover your hands with plastic wrap for 10 minutes to ensure that the oil fully absorbs into your skin. This is a great home remedy for dry and cracked hands.

Lemons contain vitamin C which is a very skin-friendly nutrient. Mix baking soda and lemon juice to make a paste. Then rub the paste into your hands for a soothing, smoothing, and exfoliating treatment. Rinse and follow up with a nourishing moisturizer.

If your hands are dry, cracked and over-washed try this solution. Rub a thick layer of your favorite hand creme such as Weleda Skin Food on your hands. Place them in a plastic bag. The moisturizer and your body's warmth will help make your hands supple in about 15 minutes.

If you are in craft-mode and looking for a new project, why not make your own hand moisturizer? The below recipe is simple because it doesn't require you to cook or melt any ingredients. It is very nourishing, but not as greasy as most body butter and will leave your hands feeling soft and moisturized.

Keep it in a small mason jar or transfer it to a small glass jar like this one.

Washing your hands is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs says the CDC. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading, so before you use any of the above methods or products, make sure to wash your hands thoroughly.

Follow these five steps every time you wash your hands:

Disclaimer: Always check with a doctor or health care provider before using essential oils, especially on children or if you have a medical condition.
