Derek Chisora's new trainer Buddy McGirt has told the heavyweight veteran to 'mug' Joseph Parker as DelBoy prepares to rough up the New Zealander this weekend.

The 37-year-old returns to the ring off the back of his points decision loss to Oleksandr Usyk last November, in which the crafty Ukrainian used his technical skills to outbox the Briton.

Chisora has since teamed up with world renowned trainer McGirt - who has coached the likes of Arturo Gatti and Sergey Kovalev - after splitting from Steve Broughton following the Usyk loss.

And McGirt is fully aware that DelBoy will need to play to his bulldozing strengths to defeat Parker, a smart and technical boxer, although he is looking to make minor adjustments to Chisora's head movement before fight night.

'At this stage in the game we really can't make any big changes,' McGirt said. 'We just have to work with what he has and be effective with it because he's been doing it one way for so long.

'He's 37 years old, he's not 27. So you've got to take what he has and make the best of it. Something simple like moving his head.

'He's telling me, 'I am moving my head!' and I'm saying, 'you're moving your head like once or twice but with this guy we've got to keep our head moving constantly.  Even in between rounds we've got to be moving our head. In the corner you've still got to be moving your head while I'm talking to you'. Got to be like second nature.'

Chisora ran out of ideas as his fight with Usyk wore on, and McGirt has implored his man not to single-mindedly look for the knockout blow on the chin but instead to 'mug' Parker with dirty tactics.

'Derek was always one to hit the guy on the chin and knock them out. I'm like 'you don't have to always hit the guy on the chin'. You hit the guy anywhere between his knees and his neck, except his nuts.

'So you hit him on the thigh, you hit him on the hip, you hit him on the shoulder, you hit him anywhere you possibly can.

'Slow him down, you've got to mug Parker. It's gonna be a long night, we've got to mug him. Mugging means we've got to stay on him. Keep that heat on him and we've got to sustain it. Each round, we've got to step on the gas a little bit more.

'I'm teaching him to hit the guy anywhere and everywhere on any part of his body - because if you drop water on a rock long enough the rock will give in. So if you hit a guy anywhere and everywhere over a period of time he's gonna give in.'

Chisora has enjoyed a late flourish to his career and a win over Parker could set him up for a second crack at the world title.

With the WBO likely to strip their version of the belt from the winner of the Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury's unification bout, the winner of Parker vs. Chisora will be in a strong position to challenge either of the organisation's top two contenders: Usyk or Joe Joyce.

McGirt says that Chisora is not lacking in motivation ahead of his Manchester dust-up.

'I don't think he needs anyone to get him psyched up in any kind of way. He knows what's at stake here so he's in a great place, so it makes my job so much easier.

'He's got a great frame of mind and he knows what he has to do in this fight. As Derek Chisora would say, let's get ready for war. It's going to be a great night.'
