Zara Tindall had the life Princess Anne "always wanted" by not having a royal title, commentators have claimed. The Queen's daughter was reportedly expected to have one offered for her then-husband and children but rejected it. Experts explained what impact this had to Channel 5 documentary, 'Zara & Anne: Like Mother, Like Daughter'.

Narrator Jennifer Saayeng told viewers: "Anne managed to free her daughter from a life of royal restrictions.

"Zara has been given the life Anne always wanted to live."

Royal commentator Victoria Arbiter gave insight: "[Anne] would have reminded Zara of her responsibilities.

"But, at the same time, she allowed her the make her mistakes."

Vanity Fair Royal Editor Katie Nicholl continued: "She's had a lot more freedom and a lot more opportunity than her mother ever did.

"Anne's vocation, her calling, her duty, was always to be the Princess Royal."

Ms Saayeng explained: "The key to understanding everything that followed came back to the decision by Princess Anne that her children would not inherit royal titles.

"No HRH for Peter and Zara."

Royal biographer Brian Hoey added: "Zara was the first royal granddaughter in 500 years to be born without a title."

Ms Arbiter revealed: "According to the 1917 Letters Patent, [Anne's] children weren't eligible for a title because they were in the female line."

Commentator Wesley Kerr told Channel 5: "A monarch's daughter is a Princess, but a monarch's granddaughter through the female line is not a Princess."

The narrator added: "This could have been resolved is Zara's father was given a title, but it seems Anne wasn't keen."

Ms Arbiter said: "When she was marrying Captain Mark Phillips, it was thought highly likely that the Queen would offer him an earldom."

Ms Nicholl confirmed: "It was Anne and Mark's decision not to take those titles."

Zara's two children, Mia Grace and Lena Elizabeth, do not have royal titles.

Her third expected child will likely not either.
