The luminous morning skies remind us that we can start afresh with hope and positivity.

Add in a spectacular location, and witnessing the breaking dawn becomes a magical travel moment that will brighten your spirits and warm your heart.

We know that travel restrictions mean a holiday isn't on the cards right now, but it doesn't hurt to dream about where you'll when post-Covid travel is possible again.

To give you a helping hand, we've picked out some of the world's most amazing destinations for breathtaking sunrise views, whether you're after a hot and sunny beach holiday, or looking to explore a glacier lagoon.

Check out the list below...

1. Koh Samui, Thailand

The Tongsai Bay was the very first five-star property to be built on the Thai island of Koh Samui 33 years ago.

The elevated position of the half-moon pool, on the eastern side of the resort overlooking the bay, is a stunning spot to watch the sunrise over the shimmering waters. Practicing a little early morning yoga and meditation as dawn breaks will make a super-chilled start to the day.

2. Lake Tahoe, USA

One of the most photographed locations in America, there is something incredibly special about sunrise at Emerald Bay, LakeTahoe.

It's an oasis of shimmering greens, pinks, turquoise and blues against a strikingly beautiful mountain backdrop on the Californian west shore. And Lake Tahoe's incredible clarity and depth make it the perfect place to take in the serenity of the dawn.

3. Santorini, Greece

Sunrise over Santorini is spectacular against the surrounding blue waters and distinctive bright white of the buildings.

This petite Greek island is hugely popular with tourists and cruise-ship daytrippers during the summer months, but set your alarm to get up early and you'll have the place and the sunrise to yourself.

4. Lake Como, Italy

When the gorgeous Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Lake Como, re-opens in March, it will launch its private hot air balloon sunrise tour.

The experience includes a transfer from the hotel, followed by a one-hour tour over the region.

Soaring above inky waters, it promises to deliver the perfect vantage point to catch a glimpse within the grounds of some of the area's most illustrious residents' villas.

Prices from £1,358 for groups of two to five. You can find out more at grandhoteltremezzo.com.

5. Red Rocks, Denver, USA

Red Rocks Amphitheatre on the outskirts of Denver is a jaw-dropping concert venue recognised for its unique rock formations and stunning views.

Its geology dates back to the Jurassic period nearly 160 million years ago, where the gradual movement of the earth resulted in sandstone ledges forming the "walls" of the amphitheatre.

The park opens one hour before sunrise for visitors to hike the trails.

On certain days, hundreds of yoga enthusiasts gather on the terraces, which are up to a mile high, at 7am to enjoy downward dogs from a different perspective.

6. Taj Mahal, India

First light is undoubtedly the best time to visit the shrine to eternal love.

A must-see on a trip to Cambodia, the site of 12th-century Angkor Wat is one of the largest religious monuments in the world.

Vividly detailed, it is built out of sandstone blocks quarried from the holy mountain of Phnom Kulen.

A landmark of enormous national pride, it even features on the nation's flag. Head to the right hand side of the pond for best views of the sunrise over the site.

8. Byron Bay, Australia

Being the most easterly point in Australia gives Byron Bay the advantage of seeing the sun come up first.

A bucket list event in itself, travellers gather at the famous Byron Bay lighthouse and watch the sun seemingly rise right out of the ocean.

Alternatively head a few miles up the road to Casuarina Beach, where the Cape Hillsborough National Park meets the shore, and there's an extra special treat.

An hour before daybreak, dozens of wallabies congregate down by the water's edge for a breakfast of mangrove seed pods, which are revealed after high tide.

9. Iceland

Iceland is an unconventional addition as it experiences 24 hours of daylight in the summer months, thanks to its close proximity to the Arctic Circle. This doesn't mean the sun doesn't set, or indeed rise - here you can actually watch both, almost consecutively.

At Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, the building-sized icebergs glisten as light from the low-lying sun bounces off their glassy exterior. As the sun sets, sleepy seals bask in the warm air.

But within minutes, the show begins again as the sun, having temporarily dropped behind the distant volcanic mountains, rises again.
