The finale for Lucifer season 5 went under substantial changes following news the show would get a sixth run.

Netflix surprised fans of the hit series by announcing an additional season of devilish antics from the satanic detective, played by British hunk Tom Ellis.

Those behind the series had expected the fifth run to be the show's last and filmed the episodes with this in mind.

With news of further instalments, changes were made to keep the show going into season 6.

Speaking to Metro, Detective Douche actor Kevin Alejandro said: "All of us went into it, and continued throughout the journey, up until the episode before the last one, thinking this was our series finale. That this [season five] was the show finale."

Admitting that they were "thrown for a loop" by the surprising news, the show's writers made a swift turnaround to amend the storylines in the episode.

He revealed that they "had to make some tweaks to our season finale."

Kevin commented: "I didn't think they could. I think they didn't think they could do it, but lo and behold, they figured out a really cool way to excel through season six."

The first half of Lucifer's fifth season has already been released with the second half due to drop on the streaming service later this year.

Star Tom Ellis has also teased the upcoming musical episode when speaking to Collider.

He said: "Well, you're basically just asking me about my two favorite episodes of Lucifer . I'm so excited.

"Ildy [Modrovich], one half of our showrunning team, has wanted to do a musical episode for a long time. It was Season 5, [which was going to be] our final season, so we definitely needed to try to do that.

"I've always wanted to do it, but I've also been of the mind that there needs to be a reason that people are singing as opposed to it's just a gimmicky episode. And the beauty of it was that we found the perfect reason for it, and not only made it service the episode, in terms of where the music comes from"
