Two people have died after a vehicle hit a kangaroo in central Queensland before crashing into a second vehicle overnight, emergency services said.

Paramedics, including critical care officers, were called to the Bruce Highway at Kolonga, about 90 kilometres west of Bundaberg, about 9.45pm on Saturday to attend the serious accident.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said one of the vehicles burst into flames as a result of the impact.

"They extinguished the flames ... a crew had to cut a casualty out of a vehicle," he said.

"We were called at quarter to 10pm and left the scene at 4am."

The spokesman said the highway was closed for several hours while the Forensic Crash Unit investigated.
