President Trump on Sunday morning attacked the New York Times for reports on unsafe and squalid conditions in migrant detention centers at the U.S. border with Mexico.

"Friday's tour showed vividly, to politicians and the media, how well run and clean the children's detention centers are. Great reviews!" Trump tweeted Sunday following a visit to a facility near McAllen, Texas, by Vice President Mike Pence and several Republican senators.

"Failing @nytimes story was FAKE! The adult single men areas were clean but crowded - also loaded up with a big percentage of criminals," Trump added, citing no evidence.

Quoting Trump's tweet, the Washington Post's Josh Dawsey, who accompanied Pence and the senators to the facility, noted the men Trump referred to, kept in a chain-linked holding area, were forced to sleep on concrete and told him they had not showered in days and did not always have access to toothbrushes.

"It was sweltering hot and the stench was horrific," Dawsey added.

Trump has repeatedly defended conditions at border detention facilities, despite the Times' and others' stories, as well as a report by the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General, which warned of "dangerous overcrowding." Many of his allies have acknowledged poor conditions and blamed congressional Democrats.
