The 1.0-litre Ford Ecoboost engine currently powers 1 in 4 new models sold in Europe. and, seven years after its launch, it has just claimed ANOTHER prized 'engine of the year' award.

This means Ford's tiny 1.0-litre engine has scooped an 'International Engine and Powertrain of the Year' gong 11 TIMES - a remarkable run of success for the popular powerplant.

Famously introduced by then-boss Alan Mulally in 2012 - he kissed the engine on stage - the downsized Ecoboost has gone on to be the mainstay of the Ford Fiesta range, Britain's best-selling car.

Ford says the motor is so small, it can sit on a sheet of A4 paper. This means it's very efficient, yet not down on power: turbo boost helps it deliver up to 140 horsepower.

A forthcoming mild hybrid version will take power up further, to 155 horsepower. It is even coming to the big Ford Transit Custom van, in plug-in hybrid guise.

Ford arguably began the trend for downsizing with the Ecoboost engine. Today, there are umpteen tiny engines with three cylinders and turbochargers. but the blue oval was the first big brand to take the plunge.

There are now more than 1.6 million 1.0-litre Ford Ecoboost engines on the road.

70 judges from 31 countries this year made the Ford Ecoboost victorious in the sub-150 horsepower category of the 2019 'engine of the year' awards - adding a new trophy to the cabined which includes:

  • Overall 'international engine of the year': 2012, 2013 and 2014
  • Best new engine: 2012
  • Best engine under 1.0-litre: 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017
  • Sub-150 PS category winner: 2019
