At first glance, it seems as though all wines should be vegan (and vegetarian) friendly, right? I mean, after all, they are made from a fruit - grapes!
You may be surprised to find; however, that a number of animal by-products can be used in the winemaking process. The most common of these are egg whites which are added to help remove harsh tannins. Things like Casein (milk protein), Gelatin (beef collagen), Isinglass (fish bladders) and Chitosan (a sugar from shellfish) can also be used.
And while these products are filtered out of the finished wine, if you want to be absolutely certain your wine is vegan friendly, you'll want to avoid wines that use these animal by-products. Unfortunately, that's where things get tricky! Not all wineries and brands make this information easy to find and not only that it can change from vintage to vintage.
Our list below of the best vegan wines are those that we have been able to confirm are vegan and vegetarian friendly for the vintages listed. This is usually through the back label but in some cases we've dug a little deeper as well to get info direct from the winery.
One last note, just because a wine is organic, does not mean it is vegan as well!
