Rugs add welcome colour and texture to bare floors, but can be a pain to keep clean. Who hasn't wished to bundle a shaggy rug into the washing machine, instead of dragging it to a professional? Enter Ruggable, the US-based brand offering machine-washable rugs.
Ruggable launched in America in 2010 and arrived in the UK in late 2021. Its offerings have been a hit with consumers, with the #Ruggable hashtag racking up more than 50.3 million views on TikTok and 43,000 tags on Instagram since its launch. The designs have also been seen in the homes of Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness, author Katherine Schwarzenegger and actress Lindsay Lohan.
As someone who's had to lug a coffee-stained rug to the dry cleaners in despair, I was intrigued. Would Ruggable's offerings live up to expectations? Here's my honest review.
Ruggable has over 1,000 designs in square, rectangular, round and runner styles, and in a range of dimensions for both interior and exterior use. The brand has also clocked up 11 fun collaborations to date, working with designer Jonathan Alder, fashion icon Iris Apfel, and brands such as Disney and Marvel, among others, on themed ranges. Everything is made to order and ships from the US, meaning delivery can take up to three weeks.
All Ruggable rugs come in two parts. There's a stain and water-resistant fabric top layer, which can be peeled off and slung in the washing machine, and a non-slip rubber base pad. There are two types of rug pad; a standard flat offering and a cushioned one that creates more bounce underfoot. They have a grippy underside that keeps the fabric layer secure.
Prices start from £99, going up to £679 for the largest offerings. Pads and toppers are available to buy separately, so you can switch one out for another design at a lower cost. Most toppers are made from a polyester and polyurethane blend, but there's also a selection of 13 plush and shaggy options too.
I chose a medium (185 x 275cm) Kamran Coral Rug with a standard pad for my living room. It arrived on time, rolled up in a single cardboard box with an instruction manual and QR code to a video tutorial. Assembly was easy, taking me around 10 minutes to put the rug together alone.
To assemble, you simply align the rolled up topper on top of the unrolled pad and unfurl it over the base, being sure not to leave any wrinkles or air pockets. I found it simple given my rug isn't huge, but I can imagine it might be fiddly to ensure the topper lies fully flat on the pad with larger rugs. You also may need to move some furniture as you need a clear space to work.

The design is gorgeous, with elegant ornate detailing and pretty muted colours. The polyester topper isn't especially soft, but still feels nice underneath bare feet. It's also quite thin but admittedly it does have to fit in the washing machine; the cushioned pad should add some additional bulk if this is an issue for you. The standard pad doesn't slide around on my laminate flooring, so you shouldn't need rug stoppers.
I put the brand's stain-resistance claims to the test and accidentally on purpose poured coffee on the rug. Happily, it came out of the machine stain-free. It also passed the spot test, with no marks remaining after I cleaned up an orange juice spill with a damp cloth.
The medium topper fit well in my regular machine, but I'm not sure a larger design would. Bear this in mind if you're after a bigger option as you'll likely need a larger-than-average washing machine to accommodate it. I used a drying rack post-wash and it was ready in just over a day, but you can tumble dry it on a low setting.
Overall, I'm very happy with my Ruggable rug! It's been in my home for over a year now and still looks pristine, despite being in a high foot traffic area. It's vacuumed weekly and washed every two to three months, and there's been no noticeable dip in quality.
A quick scout online shows the average Ruggable number is around £100 more than similar-sized rugs from the likes of Oliver Bonas or Anthropologie. Nonetheless, those rugs can't necessarily be machine washed, nor have been treated with the stain-resistant coating, so I'd say Ruggable is good value for money overall. The brand also runs regular sales online.
I can't fault Ruggable. The rug has lived up to all its promises, including the stain-resistant claims, it's easy to keep clean and it looks great in my living room too.
