33 years old, a former Korea's Got Talent runner-up
Singer Choi Sung Bong, who caused controversy with false cancer treatment claims, has passed away.
Choi Sung Bong was found dead at his residence in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, around 9:41 a.m. on the 20th.
It is presumed that Choi Sung Bong had committed suicide.
Previously, Choi Sung Bong published a post stating, "If you see this message, it means I am already dead, and this is my last message to my fans. From 2011 until now, I have received much attention and love from many people. Sincerely, thank you," leaving a suicide note.
Choi Sung Bong said, "I sincerely apologize to those who have suffered because of my foolish mistakes. I have returned all the sponsorship funds that were requested for repayment over the past two years. I will pay for my mistakes with my life."
In 2011, Choi Sung Bong gained attention after finishing as the runner-up in tvN's Korea's Got Talent and earning the nickname "Korea's Paul Potts."
Subsequently, Choi Sung Bong's battle with cancer became a hot topic.
At that time, Choi Sung Bong revealed that he was hospitalized in the severe ward due to metastatic liver and lung cancer and colorectal, prostate, and thyroid cancer.
Fans donated funds to support Choi Sung Bong, and he received encouragement as a 'symbol of hope.'
However, it was later revealed that Choi Sung Bong's cancer treatment was all false, causing controversy.
Choi Sung Bong stated, "I am not currently battling cancer. All the diagnoses, including thyroid, colorectal, prostate, lung, liver, and kidney metastases, except for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, are false."
He continued, "For years, I have been taking dozens of mental health medications daily, enduring it with a strong desire to sing. But the unknown depression and wounds have accumulated, making everyday life a hellish struggle to organize," expressing his torment.
At that time, Choi Sung Bong also displayed behaviors hinting at a drastic choice.
Finally, Choi Sung Bong, who attempted another extreme choice, passed away at 33.
