Robert Irwin is keeping up his friendly feud with Sam Mac after he almost took his job as Sunrise weatherman last year.

The 19-year-old wildlife warrior appeared on Sunrise in July 2022 where he took over Sam's weather-presenting duties for a week while he was taking personal leave.

But Sam seems to be concerned Robert will take his job for good, taking a cheeky swipe at the teen during a chat on The Morning Show on Friday.

As Robert discussed his dangerously close encounter with a python in a recent video, he revealed Sam too has had 'some close calls' with the snakes at Australia Zoo.

Sam didn't hold back when he replied: 'The only snake I've had an encounter with Robert was you, when you tried to take my job on Sunrise weather.'

'You were a snake in the grass that day.'

Robert laughed off the jab, but kept the friendly feud running by saying he's still hoping to replace him on the Channel Seven breakfast show.

'Yeah, mate, I'm still gunning for that position,' he added. 'Watch your back. I haven't forgotten.'

The rivalry began when Robert briefly took on the position as Sunrise's weather presenter last year and joked 'Sam Mac, I am coming for ya!'

Days later, Sam ranted on TikTok about Channel Seven billing Robert as the show's 'new weather presenter', even though he was just filling in for a few days.

He was furious over the fact Robert - an 'animal guy' - was able to effortlessly read the weather during live crosses from Australia Zoo in Queensland.

Sam also didn't appreciate how the zookeeper joked about taking his job and got along so well with hosts David Koch and Natalie Barr.

But what really pushed him over the edge was getting a text from his mother Loretta, who gushed over how 'amazing' and 'handsome' Robert was.

Sam, who is expecting his first child with partner Rebecca James in September, said in his video: 'People have started sending me articles saying "Watch out, Robert Irwin's going to take your job."

'I was like, "[News websites] do stuff like this all the time; I'm sure it's out of context... So I thought, to be safe, I'd check out what was said on the air.'

Sam then aired footage of Robert, the son of late Australian conservationist Steve Irwin, saying on Sunrise: 'All I can say is, Sam Mac, I'm coming for you!'

He also dug out an official Sunrise promo of Robert describing himself as 'the new weatherman', adding once again: 'Watch out, Sam Mac!'

Sam then watched back footage of one of Robert's live weather crosses and was crestfallen to discover he did a pretty good job.

'Alright! He's good,' he conceded.

Sam admitted he felt 'insecure' by it all, and a text from his mum didn't help matters after she asked him if he'd 'been fired' yet.

Robert, a regular guest on Sunrise since he was a child, filled in for two days while Sam was on leave. Katie Brown filled in for the remaining three days.
