Debris from the missing submersible Titan has been found on the ocean floor near the wreckage of the Titanic, the Coast Guard confirmed in a news briefing this afternoon.

"This morning an ROV or remote operated vehicle from the vessel Horizon Arctic discovered the tail fin of the Titan submersible approximately 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic on the sea floor," Coast Guard Rear Adm. John Mauger said at the briefing. "The debris is consistent with the catastrophic loss of the pressure chamber."

Five people were onboard. OceanGate Expeditions, the company that owned the sub, issued a statement saying they believe all "have sadly been lost."

S?everal other pieces of debris in addition to the tail fin were also found.

Earlier today, the Coast Guard said a? debris field had been found on the ocean floor by a remotely operated vehicle searching underwater in the area. The ROV reached the ocean bottom this morning.

Searchers were working in winds of 14 mph with gusts up to 19 mph, swells up to 5 feet and an air temperature of 50 degrees this morning, the Coast Guard said.

T?he submersible went missing Sunday while diving to the wreck of the Titanic, the famed passenger ship that sank when it hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage in 1912.

The voyage was run by Titan's owner, OceanGate Expeditions, which charges up to $250,000 a person to take passengers to the site, which is located 2.5 miles below the surface of a remote part of the North Atlantic Ocean.

T?itan launched from its mother ship, the Canadian-flagged Polar Prince, at about 8 a.m. EDT and was expected to resurface at 3 p.m., according to the Coast Guard.

C?ontact was lost one hour and 45 minutes into the dive.

The Coast Guard was notified at 5:45 p.m. EDT that the sub was missing.

A? desperate search ensued, with more assets being added by the day including ships, aircraft and underwater search capabilities. A surface area twice the size of Connecticut was searched, with no sign of Titan.

Five people were onboard Titan:

-Pilot Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate.

-Hamis Harding, a British adventurer.

-Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman.

-French explorer and Titanic expert Paul-Henry Nargeolet.
