A Russian interior ministry employee is facing jail after knocking down a cyclist and then stabbing him, Russian media reports.

Roman Strelkov, described as a technician with responsibility for traffic, lost control of his car while driving in the village of Kosyakovo in the Moscow region on 15 June and struck the unnamed cyclist.

Mr Strelkov, 41, then got out of his car and stabbed the victim in the stomach. He drove away from the scene without calling an ambulance, according to several Russian outlets.

The victim, 43, was later discovered unconscious by passersby and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was diagnosed with a wound to the liver.

Police questioned the cyclist, and arrested Mr Strelkov. He is being held on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and faces a jail sentence of 10 years if convicted.

The motive for the alleged crime is unclear but it may have been "revenge" according to Russia outlet Baza.

"After the accident, Strelkov became very angry about the damage to his car," the news site reported. "His windscreen was shattered."

The incident follows the recent jailing of MP Sergey Mamontov, a member of President Vladimir Putin's ruling United Russia Party, for hitting a six-year-old child with his car and then fleeing the scene.
