The cast of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny have opened up on what makes the franchise different from other blockbusters.

The long-awaited fifth movie in the hit series is due out next week, and sees Harrison Ford return as the iconic archaeologist alongside a number of new cast additions.

Among them are Shaunette Renée Wilson as Agent Mason and Boyd Holbrook as Klaber, and alongside director James Mangold they spoke exclusively to Digital Spy about how the franchise stands out.

"It's the humanity of this character," Wilson said. "We all kind of see ourselves in him, in some respect, whether it's the naughty side, the antihero, the curmudgeon, the humour, the sexy guy - whatever it is. To kind of track his journey in this world, I think is just really special."

Holbrook added: "He's the pinnacle of masculinity, and a type of hero. You said it really well: he's not perfect. He lies. He steals and cheats to get his way. He's kind of a bit of a pirate, in a way. He's a renegade."

Mangold, meanwhile, went on to praise those who have been involved in the series over the decades, saying: "The films have represented the combined talents of some of the best actors and filmmakers who have made movies ever. So there's just that.

"But then there's something very specific, which is just that unlike many of the tentpole or summer movies, these are charming films. They're brawny, and have action and athleticism and cinematic choices. They're in love with movies but they are, first and foremost, charming."

He also noted that the characters are "eccentric and interesting, and not just kind of a god in an outfit slaying villains. But much more a man with all his foibles and eccentricities and passions and obsessions that make him unusual."

"And I think that's what draws everyone to these movies," Mangold added. "And everyone remembers them more than others because it's not just 'good guy versus bad guy' and 'the good guy always has the right tool in his belt, and can knock out anyone else'.

"It's about a guy who's just like you or me, and is somehow put into extraordinary circumstances."

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is released in UK cinemas on June 28 and in US cinemas on June 30.
