A man will face court next month charged after two teens were killed while being towed in a boat.

Six months after two teenagers were killed after being towed by a boat in northern NSW, an elderly man has been charged over the on water accident.

The boys, 13 and 14, were on an inflatable in a waterway at Rushes Creek, northwest of Tamworth, when they collided with a tree stump on December 27.

Bystanders performed CPR until paramedics arrived, however both boys died at the scene.

The boat's driver, a 73-year-old man was taken to hospital for mandatory testing, and a crime scene was established.

The 73-year-old was issued a future Court Attendance Notice for operating a recreational vessel negligently causing death or grievous bodily harm on Thursday.

He is due in Tamworth Local Court next month.

A report on the boys' deaths will be prepared for the coroner.
