Queensland state school students will now be allowed to compete at equestrian events on behalf of their school after Education Minister Grace Grace asked the department to review its ban.

About a week before Equestrian Queensland's Interschool State Championships, some students discovered the education department had issued a directive that they could not represent their schools at the event.

At the time the department told ABC Radio Brisbane it made the decision after regional offices asked about safety assessments and for information about affiliation with Equestrian Queensland.

The ban would have affected students from about 80 state schools set to compete at the event in Toowoomba next week.

Following media coverage of the issue, Ms Grace asked her department to look into the matter.

"As a result, I can confirm state school children can represent their schools at any upcoming Equestrian Queensland events," she said.

"The department has already contacted Equestrian Queensland, who will be letting families know directly today.

"I'm pleased that this issue has now been resolved."

Parent Kelly Frampton, who was advocating to change the department's decision, said her daughter Lily had been devastated by the original directive.

Ms Frampton welcomed the "excellent news".

"It means she gets to proudly represent her school and wear the uniform and be recognised for her achievements by the school," she said.

"We haven't told her yet because she's still at school, but she is going to be over the moon when she gets home."

Equestrian Queensland chief executive Briston Toft said the association was very pleased with the outcome.

"A department representative contacted us earlier this morning and advised of the change position and clarified they are fully supportive of state school students participating in our competition, Which is a fantastic outcome for all our families and members," he said.
