A White Wine Spritz is sort of retro these days. You'll seldom find it on trendy bar menus, and it's been relegated to the sort of thing your mum drank back in the early 00s. However, we believe the White Wine Spritz deserves to be recognised in all its summery, refreshing glory, so we've put together the ultimate White Wine Spritz recipe for you.
We used a classic Sauvignon Blanc in ours as the zesty, tropical flavours work well in a light drink. The white vermouth gives the drink a lovely herbal tang, but you could easily leave this out if you want something less boozy or simply don't have it to hand.
Similarly, you can switch up the garnish depending on the wine you're using, or just your favourite flavours. Try a wedge of lemon with a Spanish Albariño, or some elderflower cordial with a Gewürztraminer.
What's in a White Wine Spritz?
A White Wine Spritz is usually made with white wine and soda water. There's usually a load of ice involved too, as well as nice citrusy garnishes. Sometimes vermouth or even gin is added. We've chosen vermouth for ours to make it into a proper cocktail, but you can easily leave it out.
What wine is best for a White Wine Spritz?
A citrusy, fruity wine is best for a White Wine Spritzer. Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Chenin Blanc and even some Spanish or Portuguese whites work well. Leave any oaky or buttery wines like Chardonnay or oaked white Rioja out of this one, as they don't suit this spritzy drink.
Which sparkling water is best for a White Wine Spritz?
You want to go for a neutral flavour here, so we recommend using soda water rather than any flavoured waters or tonics. If you do use tonic, the flavour of the drink will be slightly sweeter. So if that's your jam, go for it.
What are some other spritz recipes?
Spritz cocktails are perfect for summer sipping, even if you're a red wine drinker. We've got a stellar recipe for a Red Wine Spritz, as well as all the classics like Aperol, Limoncello and even the trendy Hugo Spritz.
