Adele Roberts is leaving BBC Radio One after eight years, the broadcaster has announced.

The presenter, 44, had hosted the Weekend Breakfast Show since 2020 after previously fronting the station's Early Morning Breakfast Show. But it has now emerged the Southport-born DJ has already presented her last show, which was in May.

On Wednesday, the BBC announced Adele would be leaving to pursue other projects. Sam MacGregor and Danni Diston are set to take over, with the show relocating from London to Cardiff.

Station bosses said listeners would 'continue to hear Adele's voice across the radio as she continues to be part of the BBC family.' Adele first rose to fame in 2002 as a contestant on Big Brother 3, where she finished in seventh place.

She joined the BBC in 2012 as a presenter on Radio 1Xtra before joining Radio One in 2015.She took over the Weekend Breakfast Show in November 2020 as part of a big presenting shake-up.

Aled Haydn Jones, Head of Radio One, said: "Adele is thoroughly loved by the Radio One family and audience. She always puts others first; whether it's key workers during the pandemic on her show, other people's health during her own diagnosis of cancer, or supporting her fellow colleagues at the station.

"Adele ended her run of shows at Radio One while continuing to do all of this. She continually goes above and beyond for others and I want to say a huge thank you to her for everything she has done over the last eight years for the station."

Sam and Danni, who were given their first opportunity to host on the station during the 2020 festive period as part of Radio One's Christmas Takeover, will join forces to co-host BBC Radio One's new Weekend Breakfast show - with their first stint set for Saturday 9 September.

They said: "We are SO excited to officially be joining the Radio One family! Having our own show is something we've both dreamed of since we can remember! Weekend Breakfast is always a great laugh, the listeners are brilliant and we can't wait to get started!

"It means so much to us that we will be broadcasting live from BBC Cymru Wales in Cardiff. It's the city where we became best mates, began presenting together and now, the city we proudly call home. Bringing the first daytime Radio One show to Wales is going to be so much fun, LETS DO THIS!"

Adele was diagnosed with stage two bowel cancer in October 2021 and kept fans updated on her health journey as she was treated and had a stoma fitted.

She was given the all clear by doctors last June and in April she became the fastest woman ever to complete the London Marathon with a stoma bag. The day after setting the world record, Adele returned to hospital for a CT scan, taking her medal with her to pay tribute to her radiographers.
