We are creeping closer to the start of training camp and some big name players are still without a team.
Ezekiel Elliott is still looking for a team after being released by the Dallas Cowboys.
Elliott, a St. Louis native, is an all-time great Buckeyes player and was an NFL superstar after getting drafted by Dallas in 2016. However, after he got paid a huge contract by the team after holding out, his performance on the field dipped every single year.
Last year, he shared the backfield with Tony Pollard as it became clear that he would be the next star at the position as his play continued to get better.
CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin is now playing matchmaker this week by pairing up running backs with potential landing spots. Benjamin has Elliott signing a one-year, $5 million new deal with the Patriots to play under legendary head coach Bill Belichick.
"New England has young Rhamondre Stevenson as a potential offensive focal point, but after cutting the injury-riddled James Robinson before he could even make his Patriots debut, they could use proven insurance," Benjamin wrote on June 19, 2023. "Elliott may be past his full-time days, but as a pass blocker and short-term rotational piece, he'd fit right into a typically crowded Bill Belichick backfield."
Last week, the Patriots shockingly released Robinson after giving him a multi-year deal just months ago. In October of 2022, the Jaguars traded Robinson to the New York Jets for a conditional late-round pick. However, Robinson was active for just four games with New York, and rushed for 85 total yards.
Robinson is again a free agent. In 39 career games played, Robinson has rushed for 2,262 yards and 18 touchdowns.
The Cowboys released Elliott in March largely due to his $90 million contract, but they have left the door open to bringing him back.
Elliott played 7 seasons for the Cowboys. He had 1,881 carries for 8,262 yards, 305 catches for 2,336 yards, and scored 80 touchdowns. He was selected to play in 3 Pro Bowls.
Elliott is a three-time Pro Bowl selection who had 876 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2022 despite injuries and a diminished role in the offense.
