Police investigating the death of an elderly man on the Sunshine Coast have released CCTV footage in an appeal for witnesses.

John Kerr, 87, was found on Noosa's Hastings Street on Sunday morning with severe head injuries after an what police described as a random attack.

Passers-by tried to help him before paramedics arrived, but he died at the scene.

A person of interest is in custody but charges have not yet been laid.

Police have now released CCTV footage of people they believe may have seen something.

Neither the pedestrian nor the people in the vehicles in the footage are connected to the suspect or the victim, police said.

In the footage, a man can be seen walking along a beachfront path at 6am on Sunday.

He is wearing a blue hoodie, shorts, thongs and a hat.

The footage also shows three vehicles driving down Hastings Street early on Sunday morning: a dark-coloured sedan at 5:11am, a white Toyota Corolla at 5:37am, a dark green Holden Commodore at 5:47am.

Police believe the people in the vehicles could be from interstate.

There is no CCTV footage of the attack.

Mr Kerr's family released a photograph of him on Monday in the hope it would help the investigation.

Speaking earlier this week, Noosa Golf Club's general manager Allan Harris said Mr Kerr was a "well-liked and well-respected" member for the past 28 years.

He said Mr Kerr never missed a chance to golf with his friends.
