One of Britain's most iconic seaside destinations has been named this year's most underrated staycation spot.

According to a study by Dacia, 34 million Britons are expected to head off on a staycation this summer.

Nearly two thirds of those surveyed want to explore somewhere new with almost half searching for a hidden gem.

Despite that, around 30 percent of Britons said they had visited the same staycation spot on multiple occasions.

Luke Broad, Dacia brand director for the UK, said "Adventure is in our brand's DNA, and we want to help Brits discover the most incredible and exciting new road trips across the UK this summer, especially those places they might have overlooked in the past."

Blackpool topped the list as this year's most underrated staycation destination. The iconic seaside resort is known for its Pleasure Beach fairground and its landmark Blackpool Tower.

The resort town first became popular in the 18th century, when wealthy people started to head to its beaches as they thought sea water cured diseases.

Although the resort suffered when cheap package holidays enticed Britons to holiday abroad instead of in the UK, it's now enjoying a resurgence.

?The Northern city is a top destination for ballroom dancers and the city's Tower Ballroom is world-renowned.

Cumbria and Glasgow rounded off the top three underrated destinations while Chester just missed out.

Skegness was ranked fifth on the staycation hotlist, a welcome accolade after it was named one of the worst seaside towns in the country in a recent Which? Travel ranking.
