The Princess of Wales's 'two-for-one' dress we'll all be wearing this summer

For the long-awaited reopening of the National Portrait Gallery, the Princess of Wales wore a look by the London-based label Self-Portrait. See what she did there?

But the wordplay was only part of the story attached to Kate's outfit on Tuesday. The look she chose was one of the brand's signature "two-for-one" dresses - the jacket and skirt attach together to form a dress. The flattering hybrid is fast becoming one of the most popular dresses of the summer season - ideal for anyone looking for a quick and easy route to polished style.

The jacket-esque bodice has a neat lapel neckline and cinched waist, and falls into a knife-pleated midi skirt. This clever, balanced cut gives an instant illusion of a tailored silhouette. The dress does all the thinking for you - no need to traipse the shops searching for a coordinating cover-up.

Kate matched up her monochrome look with a black Chanel clutch bag and Aquazzura heels, but Self-Portrait designer Han Chong has dozens of colour and fabric combinations in his collection, spanning boucle and lace, brights and neutrals. Some versions can also be taken apart and worn separately, mixed and matched with other pieces in the wearer's wardrobe.

Kate has at least three other variations in her wardrobe, in white, black and taupe. She previously had worn versions of the style during Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee celebrations, as well as to a Remembrance service in November.

For royal women following dress code protocols, the dress ticks all the boxes. Princess Beatrice owns white and black versions (the latter she wore at a Westminster Hall vigil ahead of the late Queen's funeral). Princess Madeleine of Sweden has one, as does Flora Vesterberg, granddaughter of the late Queen's first cousin, Princess Alexandra.

For her first Trooping the Colour, photographed in proximity to the Royal family, the Prime Minister's wife Akshata Murty also turned to Self-Portrait, wearing a cream version of the dress and with a Laura Cathcart pillbox hat.

It's 10 years since Chong launched Self-Portrait. His original lace midis became It dresses, setting the agenda for what British wedding guests were wearing for summers to come. A decade on, his repertoire has expanded greatly - the hybrid is just the latest in a line of innovative hits at, crucially, accessible prices.

Chong, who was born in Malaysia and studied at London's Central Saint Martins college, previously told The Telegraph of his pride at dressing the Princess of Wales in his £380 dresses, rather than expensive couture.

"All my friends are normal girls with normal incomes," he said of his mission to democratise the designer occasionwear market. "They couldn't find pieces that were a bit special."

Across the high street, similar silhouettes are filtering in - Karen Millen's Structured Crepe dress hits the right proportions, or the Princess's look can be recreated with carefully coordinated separates.

For anyone still out there with summer occasionwear dilemmas to solve, the hybrid offers a one-stop solution - expect to see versions on wedding guests, racegoers, and royals alike.
