Conservative podcaster Steve Bannon blasted Donald Trump's "handlers" after the former president nearly admitted mishandling government documents in an interview on Fox News.
During the Monday interview, Trump defended taking classified government documents and refusing to return them.
"Like every other president, I take things out," Trump told host Bret Baier. "In my case, I took it out pretty much in a hurry. People packed it up and left. I had clothing in there; I had all sorts of personal items in there. Much, much stuff."
On Tuesday, Bannon suggested that the interview was an unforced error for Trump's 2024 campaign.
"I don't know why President Trump is doing interviews on Fox like that. It's contentious; it's nitpicky," Bannon remarked. "It's just not the way you comport yourself. It's not an interview, it's an interrogation, and it's not acceptable, but his handlers are greater minds than ours."
Bannon said Trump "handled it fine, but it's just, I don't know, why reward your enemies?"
"Rupert Murdoch is the enemy of President Trump and the enemy of MAGA," he added. "You're going to get lots of shiny toys, but they are not supporters of MAGA. They're not supporters of populism. They're not supporters of nationalism. They're a bunch of foreigners."
