BioWare's RPG franchise has been a long-running favorite with fans, and many are hoping the upcoming Dragon Age: Dreadwolf can deliver another memorable adventure. Starting in 2009, the Dragon Age series has enjoyed three mainline entries so far and a number of spin-off titles including mobile and browser-based games. There may have been some slight ups and downs, with a few fans feeling letdown by Dragon Age 2 after the success of Dragon Age: Origins, but for the most part, gamers have been impressed with the developer's foray into fantasy storytelling.

Now that Dragon Age: Dreadwolf's launch is on the horizon-even if an official release date hasn't been confirmed just yet-some players might want to look back at the series so far. With several games to experience, short stories and novels to indulge in, and comics to read, there's definitely a lot of Dragon Age content to consume. But the central tenet of the franchise has always been its various video game releases, and these tell the narrative of the world of Thedas leading up to the start of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf's upcoming adventure.

Setting the bar high, the original Dragon Age title remains a favorite among genre fans, particularly because of its varied character origin stories and epic narrative. Introducing players to the continent of Thedas in the year 9:30, Dragon Age: Origins was a masterclass in world-building and helped to cement the series as one of BioWare's most beloved. While the game's DLC Leliana's Song is a prequel and therefore technically the first piece of game content in terms of chronology, Dragon Age: Origins is undoubtedly the entry that started everything off.

Often maligned for its scope, reuse of assets, and less-impressive narrative compared to its predecessor, Dragon Age 2 still has its share of fans. With a memorable protagonist and an iconic list of companions, Dragon Age 2 helped to introduce some of the most fan-favorite characters into the franchise such as series regular Varric. Chronologically, it also covers the most amount of time starting in the year 9:30 and ending in 9:37 and covers some pivotal points in the continent's history.

The third mainline title in the Dragon Age series, Dragon Age: Inquisition introduced some new features like the ability to play as a Qunari, and was considered by many to be an improvement on Dragon Age 2. Taking place three years after Dragon Age 2 finished, Dragon Age: Inquisition covers the tumultuous period between 9:40 and 9:41, with its Trespasser DLC jumping ahead to 9:44. The release of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf marks the first time that a main entry will be a direct sequel, and fans will be eager to learn the fallout of Solas' betrayal and the consequences for the continent in the next game.

There is much anticipation for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf among the fanbase, as players are eager to learn what the elven mage has been up to. While it hasn't been confirmed exactly when the game will take place, gamers know the events will follow the end of Dragon Age: Inquisition and its final Trespasser DLC. With the recent Tevinter Nights short story collection covering 9:44-9:45, it's likely Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will be set at a similar time.

Alongside the main entries, the Dragon Age series had a number of spin-offs such as the browser games Dragon Age Journeys, Dragon Age Legends, and Dragon Age: The Last Court, and the mobile game Heroes of Dragon Age. Dragon Age Legends was a tie-in to Dragon Age 2 and allowed players to unlock additional content in the main game, while Dragon Age: The Last Court was set between the events of Dragon Age 2 and Dragon Age: Inquisition. Heroes of Dragon Age had a slightly different approach and explored a few "what if?" scenarios based on characters and plot lines within the canon games.
