A 45-year-old woman who "shares all things anti-aging and beauty" has pointed out the five common mistakes that cause women to look older, and has explained how to avoid them. Nicole Smith is an aesthetic physician assistant from Laguna Beach, California who posts on social media advice on how to look younger.

In a recent TikTok video, the beauty expert counted some elements women overlook in their appearance that can make them look older. She said: "Besides the obvious like wrinkles and skin quality, let me tell you what is aging you."

For her first piece of advice, Nicole said that an "outdated hairstyle" will cause people to make assumptions about your age and that opting for a more trendy hairstyle can take years off your appearance.

Nicole explained: "The hair theory is real and this is the idea that people will perceive you differently based on how you style your hair. So if you're not keeping up with hair trends it's making you look older."

For her second tip, Nicole said weight can also be a factor in making people look older. She said: "Seven out of 10 Americans are overweight. You'd be surprised at how much younger you will look if you lose 10 to 20 pounds. Healthy lifestyle and maintaining a healthy weight will keep you looking young."

Nicole also said that "yellow or crooked teeth" can also age someone. She advised: "Avoid drinks like coffee and red wine to maintain a youthful smile."

When it comes to fashion, wearing clothes from a different era can also cause assumptions about age. Nicola has said to ditch the "outdated style" and added: "If you're wearing clothes in your closet that are more than five years old - this is aging you."

For her final tip, Nicole has said the right mentality can also help people seem much younger. She said: "Your attitude has everything to do with how people perceive you. Nagging and complaining will get you nowhere but a positive attitude will project a youthful spirit."

People quickly took to Nicole's comment section to thank her for her advice and share their own experiences. One person said: "The weight part can go either way. Being very thin makes your face look aged."

Another user wrote: "I'm 53 and totally agree. I follow all these suggestions and most people think I'm much younger."

Someone else joked: "I'm not avoiding coffee or wine, I need them so I don't end up in prison."
