A man accused of murdering his cellmate in a South Australian jail has been remanded in custody after a brief court hearing.

Benjamin Anthony Shuman, 33, was charged with the murder of 52-year-old Jason Douglas Wright, who was found dead in his cell at Yatala Labour Prison in Adelaide's north on Saturday evening.

During a brief court hearing, which Mr Shuman did not attend, his lawyer said his client was undergoing mental health treatment.

The lawyer told the court his client intended to apply for bail.

The matter is due back in court in a week.

Police have previously said that Mr Wright was found unresponsive in his Yatala cell about 5:30pm on Saturday.

Major Crime detectives, forensic investigators and officers from the police corrections section attended the high-security facility.

Department for Correctional Services chief executive David Brown has said both men were on remand when the incident occurred.

"The Remand Centre is the principle receiving centre for metropolitan Adelaide, but after that initial reception and assessment if someone is on remand for a period of time they will move on to a site like Yatala," he told ABC Radio Adelaide earlier on Monday.

Mr Brown said the matter would "now be subject to forensic investigation".

"A medical emergency alarm was raised at Yatala Labour Prison, staff responded to that alert and located the victim and provided immediate emergency first aid alongside the prison health staff," he said.

"Ambulance [crews] attended, but unfortunately were unsuccessful in their efforts to resuscitate the victim."
