Diablo 4 Players Want Changes to How Treasure Goblins Work

Many players consider treasure goblins in Diablo 4 to be underwhelming compared to their Diablo 3 cousins, and they hope that Blizzard will take another look at them. Though treasure goblins miss their laugh in Diablo 4, they seem to be missing their riches as well. Diablo 4 players are better off farming dungeons and Helltides for loot, as killing a treasure goblin is roughly the same as opening a Resplendent Chest. There's no thrill in catching a servant of Greed in Diablo 4, and though not a game-defining feature by any measure, fans seem to miss the old treasure goblins fiercely.

The Campfire Chat held on June 16 revealed that Blizzard was willing to listen to the Diablo community, as many missing quality-of-life features in Diablo 4 will slowly be added over the course of the next few months. Taking this into consideration, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that treasure goblins will be addressed if players continue to vent their frustration, and most importantly, provide quality feedback.

The recent batch of complaints against the treasure goblins was kicked off in featurecast's thread, opened on the Diablo 4 subreddit, where it swiftly garnered plenty of interest from the Diablo community. With only four difficulty levels present at launch through the World Tiers in Diablo 4, treasure goblins are not only easy to kill, but they barely drop any rewarding loot for doing so. They lack the variety from Diablo 3, as Gem Hoarders, Blood Thieves, Gilded Barons, and Malevolent Tormentors are all missing in the sequel.

Given the current scarcity of gold as a currency in Diablo 4, having a dedicated treasure goblin that exclusively drops an enticing pile of coins on the ground when struck (or killed) would be well-received by the community. Furthermore, an easy way to fix the generic treasure goblins would be to at least get one guaranteed legendary item per kill. As with many game systems in Diablo 4, players seem to enjoy the foundation, but less so its execution. Treasure goblins could be a terrific carrot-on-a-stick in Diablo 4's endgame, but their current iteration leaves a lot to be desired.

Though fans had their apprehension when Blizzard announced Diablo 4 as a live service game, the support it enjoys from the developers will hopefully allow Diablo 4 to shrug off its lack of polish well before the launch of its first expansion. As frustrating as some of its shortcomings have been, many players would agree that it's in a much better state now than Diablo 3 was on release. The ceiling is far higher for Diablo 4, but the journey to get there is still ongoing.

Diablo 4 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
