Colin Farrell's series, The Penguin, received an official rating ahead of its upcoming premiere on the recently renamed streaming service Max.

The spin-off of The Batman, starring the 47-year-old Golden Globe-winning actor, was listed with a TV-MA rating - which is the television equivalent of an R-rating in film.

Given the rating, the Batman star - who looked unrecognizable in prosthetics while filming in April - will inevitably give a wild performance in the titular drug kingpin role.

The upcoming crime drama set in the fictional Gotham City is anticipated to be released sometime in 2024.

Although the official premiere is still months away, Max recently released an action-packed first teaser trailer about the iconic DC villain.

The brief yet memorable teaser captures Farrell, 46, in character as The Penguin, shooting foes with a laugh and dubbing himself the 'new kingpin of Gotham.'

The streaming service frequently release shows with a TV-MA rating, but The Batman has a PG-13 rating.

This comparison suggests the spin-off will introduce DC comic book fans to a more graphic watch with stronger language.

Previously, Farrell inhabited the role of The Penguin in the 2022 film The Batman.

It is anticipated that the timeline of the upcoming show will be in sync with where the film left off - following the death of Batman's nemesis, Carmine Falcone.

According to IMDb, the eight-episode miniseries 'follows the transformation of Oswald Cobblepot from a disfigured nobody to a noted Gotham gangster.'

The show also stars Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Carmine.

She is seen at one point in the trailer as she enjoyed an intimate dinner with The Penguin and clinked glasses.

In the sneak peek released in April, Farrell is spotted musing, 'This is one of those moments. You ask yourself, what kind of life do I want? The world ain't built for guys like us. That's why we gotta take whatever we decide as ours.'

The trailer appears to show The Penguin in the midst of a power struggle, as he manages to resist an attempted stabbing after discussing fellow Gotham mobster Carmine Falcone.

Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin promises he's capable of more: 'You ain't seen what I can do,' he is heard saying before he is shown shooting at a car with a cameraman in tow.

He coldly threatens one young man: 'You step out of line, even once. I'll gut you like a goddamn fish.' And delights in his killer reputation.

'You imagine, the people saying my name in the streets after you're gone. Means something,' he tells one woman.

Seconds later, he ruthlessly shoots down a foe before laughing in amusement.

The trailer ends with him hissing, 'The new kingpin of Gotham.'

Colin recently told Variety that he was not aware of a potential miniseries about the villainous character while making the 2022 film, but knew there was ample material to work with creatively and aesthetically.

'The only thing I had an idea was that I wasn't nearly getting to explore the character as much as I wanted to,' he said. 'Because there was all this extraordinary work done by Mike Marino and Mike Fontaine and his team, and I just thought it was the tip of the iceberg, pardon the pun, that we were getting to do the six or seven scenes that we did in the film. I was grateful for them, but I wanted more.'

Colin said that his transformation into The Penguin is what convinced The Batman producer Dylan Clark to bring the project to life.

'Honest to god, any thought I had about an extended series was to do with Mike Marino's work,' he told the outlet. 'I just knew there was so much to do with it - age it up, age it down.

'He's just such a genius, Mike, so it was his work that was the inspiration, really.'

Colin last attended the 95th Academy Awards, on March 12, where he was nominated for Best Actor for his role in the acclaimed film The Banshees of Inisherin.
