As the mercury soars across the country, you can take a leaf out of the Royal family's book and use a 52p special ingredient to give your snacks some zing.
Queen Elizabeth loved "wonderful" cucumber sandwiches made with mint. As reported by our sister title, The Mirror, television presenter Jenny Hanley recalled the secret when she previously appeared on Boom Radio.
She said: "The most wonderful thing that happened at one of the Buckingham Palace garden parties that I was lucky enough to go to was not the fact of the scones but the cucumber sandwiches.
"They may be a joke to some people, but when you've had a cucumber sandwich out on the grass at the back of Buckingham Palace and the sun is shining and there's mint in it, then you know you've made it!
"I will never make a cucumber sandwich without chopped mint in it again." The sandwiches were made with white bread, buttered, and topped with sliced cucumber, a dash of mint, and a sprinkle of pepper.
Fresh mint costs as little as 52 pence in the likes of Tesco and Sainsbury's if you want to give it a go for yourself. Alongside the sandwiches, Queen Elizabeth II also used to enjoy a cup of tea.
Her preference was for for Earl Grey or Assam, with a splash of milk added afterward, and she also loved a slice of chocolate biscuit cake, according to her former chef, Darren McGrady.
The sweet treat is made with dark chocolate and Rich Tea biscuits. Prince William and Kate Middleton are also said to be fans, with the couple reportedly serving some at their wedding.
Jenny Hanley presents a show on Boom Radio every Saturday at 2pm-4pm. Boom is a UK-wide national radio station principally aimed at Baby Boomers aged 60 to 75 years old.
