A man has plunged over 4,000 feet to his death at the Grand Canyon - the latest tragedy to hit one of America's most popular tourist destinations.

Authorities say the 33-year-old, who is yet to be named, "went over the edge" of the Skywalk - a horseshoe-shaped viewing platform that juts out from over the cliff.

Rescuers were called to the scene at around 9am on Monday, June 5, and used rope to reach the man, who was pronounced dead.

In a statement, the Mohave County Sheriff's Office said a helicopter and two rope specialists were deployed in a rescue operation.

It comes as a Freedom of Information (FoI) request by the New York Post revealed the Grand Canyon is one of the deadliest National Parks in the United States.

At least 56 people have been reported missing at the 1,900-square-mile site in Arizona since the start of 2018. In this period, at least six people have been found dead.

In May, a 36-year-old woman from Indiana died while hiking in the canyon as she attempted a journey from the rim to the Colorado River and back again in one day.

Following the tragic incident, officials reminded visitors of the sweltering heat experienced at the famous site where exposed areas of trail can reach 120 degrees.

The woman was found on a trail but rangers were unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead.

In February, a 56-year-old man from Wisconsin also died on a trail as he attempted to hike to the Colorado River and back.

The Mohave County Sheriff's Office urged members of the public struggling with their mental health to seek help following the latest death.

"An investigation is ongoing. If you or someone needs help, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255)," their statement said.
