Alexis Sanchez has made a phone call to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta in an attempt to get the club to re-sign him this summer, according to reports.

Reports claim the Gunners are looking to sign two midfielders, a centre-back, a right-back and a forward in the summer transfer window.

And Sanchez has been trying to become one of Arteta's five signings this summer as he looks to add to the squad depth at his disposal after Arsenal qualified for the Champions League.

Chilean newspaper LaTercera has claimed that Sanchez is dreaming of a return to Arsenal over the next few months as he considers his options at Marseille.

Sanchez scored 80 goals in 166 appearances for Arsenal over a four-year spell before controversially moving to Premier League rivals Manchester United in a swap deal for Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Chile was a massive flop at Man Utd and eventually moved on to Inter Milan before ending up at Marseille, where he has been in great form this season, contributing 17 goals and three assists in 42 matches in all competitions.

LaTercera adds that Sanchez has been left 'upset' after making a call to Arteta to see if he'd have him back at the Emirates Stadium, with the 'slamming of the door' by the Spaniard like a 'cannon shot straight to the heart' for the Chilean.

Sanchez 'wanted to restore bridges with the Gunners, where he reached his best level and became an idol' but the 'response was not what he expected'.

The report insists that Sanchez 'would have a statue in the Emirates Stadium' if he'd stayed rather than choosing to jump ship to Man Utd in 2018.

Arteta was made 'aware' that Sanchez was 'willing to make every possible effort to make' a move happen this summer - but the Chilean 'ultimately does not fit into club plan'.

In an interview in 2020, Sanchez revealed how he knew during his first training session at Carrington that he'd made a mistake leaving Arsenal for Manchester United.

Sanchez said: "I accepted the opportunity to go to United, it felt tempting and it was something good for me, I liked this club a lot when I was a kid.

"Eventually I signed but I didn't ask for information on what was happening inside the club.

"Sometimes there are things that you don't realise until you get there, and I remember the first training session I had, I realised a lot of things.

"They laughed, I told them there's something that doesn't sit right, it doesn't seem good.

"But I already signed, I was already there. After the first few months I carried on having the same feeling, we weren't united as a team in that moment."
