Unlike other forms of hepatitis, hepatitis A rarely causes severe illness and does not lead to a persistent infection. Nearly everyone who gets hepatitis A will recover completely within a few weeks to months. A very small number of people can get severe disease. In very rare cases (less than one-tenth of 1% of patients), the disease can cause liver failure, which can result in death if a liver transplant cannot be arranged.
