The Princess of Wales and Camilla at the 2022 Trooping the Colour. Kate's hats have evolved over the years to become more striking

When it comes to topping off her looks, The Princess of Wales has got the art of hat dressing mastered, opting either for muted colours with intricate designs or statement sculptural styles by milliners such as Jane Corbett and Philip Treacy.

We can expect to see another skilful example at tomorrow's Trooping of the Colour.

While the Princess's approach has undoubtedly evolved, the key to Kate's millinery style is consistently choosing creations which perfectly complement her outfit and are an extension of her look, carefully co-ordinated in bespoke matching shades.

Where once she chose small discreet fascinators, Catherine now opts for larger saucer hats sweeping across her face for an elegant silhouette.

If her choice of headpiece has become more refined, so has her ever-glossy hair styling.

Today, it is less about her famously flawless blow-dry with flowing long locks, rather  has been choosing to pull her hair back into a chignon - placing all focus on her hat.

We have seen a shift in Kate's overall  style choices.

Certainly, she has remained true to her favourite British fashion designers and has worn Alexander McQueen to all but two of the Trooping the Colour parades.

(This is the brand helmed by Sarah Burton and has been woven into her image since the day in 2011 she said 'I do'.)

That said, the Princess has started to go for more chic, pared-back yet striking styles that reflect her maturity and the significance of her role in the British monarchy.

The annual Trooping the Colour parade is one of the major events of the royal calendar, and over the years the Princess of Wales has given us a variety of ensembles on the balcony, each one as effortlessly stylish as the last.

The style legacy she has already left is one of pastel fascinators, colourful coat dresses and some of her most iconic hat looks.

Increasingly daring and yet more elegant too, the polished princess' impeccable style has gradually matured towards more sophisticated and striking choices and a defined silhouette.

2011

For her debut appearance at Trooping the Colour, Kate wore a monochrome ensemble made up of a white Alexander McQueen coat dress and a sculptural sheer black hat by Lock & Co.

2012

Looking elegant in light blue, she wore a bespoke dress by Erdem with floral embroidered detailing and a bow fascinator styled to the front of her face by Jane Corbett.

2013

While pregnant with Prince George, Kate chose a blush pink Alexander McQueen coat with oversized pearl buttons and a bow adorned Jane Corbett hat that featured a delicate lace underlay.

2014

This year it was a pearl and powder blue jacquard Alexander McQueen two-piece suit with a similarly hued Jane Taylor fascinator adorned with delicate lace flowers.

2015

After giving birth to Princess Charlotte, Kate marked her return to royal duties with a Catherine Walker floral coat and Lock & Co fascinator. Crafted from sinamay, the wide brim hat is finished with a single feather.

2016

Returning to favourite designer Alexander McQueen, this year it was a fit and flare coat teamed with a Philip Treacy hat. The saucer blush pink hat featured silk rosettes under the brim.

2017

For her seventh Trooping the Colour ceremony, all eyes were on Kate's punchy pink look. Co-ordinating a Jane Taylor hat with an Alexander McQueen dress, this matchy matchy ensemble is anything but boring.

2018

Although Kate usually leans towards the side of simplicity, this complex hat was a bold choice. Combining lace, florals and pleating, the oversized fascinator was the perfect addition to her Alexander McQueen duck egg blue dress.

2019

Echoing her 2016 look, Kate's lemon yellow Alexander McQueen coat was elegantly complemented with a Philip Treacy statement piece. Curving up at the brim with an explosive bouquet of flowers it perfectly frames her face.

2022

Regal in white with accents of blue, this year saw the princess make a statement in Philip Treacy. The striking two-tone navy and white contrast fascinator had an old school Hollywood feel, paired with an Alexander McQueen coat.
