A small aircraft has crashed while attempting to land on an airstrip on Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services say initial reports indicate six people were on board.

Four people are being taken to local clinics in serious conditions.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau, and NT Police, are investigating.

The Anindilyakwa Land Council, which represents the traditional owners of the Groote archipelago, posted a statement on social media this afternoon confirming some of its staff members were onboard the plane when it crashed.

"A number of ALC staff were involved in the accident this afternoon at Groote Eylandt Airport," it said.

"All passengers and crew are now receiving medical care.

"ALC thoughts and well wishes are with all families impacted."

More to come.
