Max Verstappen has revealed he "would have loved" to have taken part in Red Bull's event at the Nurburgring in September, but boss Helmut Marko said he was not allowed to do it.

Sebastian Vettel was announced as the next driver to return to the Red Bull cockpit for the 'Red Bull Formula Nurburgring' event in early September, taking to the infamous Nordschleife in his title-winning RB7 from 2011 - adapted to run on sustainable fuels for the occasion.

He will join former team-mate and eight-time race winner Daniel Ricciardo in driving older Red Bull machinery around the 'Green Hell' that weekend in demo runs, and the reigning World Champion said he would have relished the opportunity to have been a part of it too.

Alas, however, he will not be able to do so, as Red Bull motorsport advisor Marko put a stop on that happening, as he knew the Dutchman would not simply go for a Sunday drive around the circuit.

"I wanted to do it, but I was not allowed by Helmut," Verstappen told reporters in Canada, as quoted by Motorsport.com.

"He knew that I would try and go to the limits. I would have loved to do it.

"I didn't want to start unnecessary issues. I heard this thing was coming up, and Helmut was sitting at the table when it came up, and he said: 'No, no, no, you're not doing that!'"

When it comes to him testing the limits, the topic of the two-time World Champion looking at the overall lap record around the circuit would also have been a possibility - and he admitted the temptation would have absolutely been there for him, even without "proper" tyres on his car.

"I would have definitely given it a go," Verstappen said when asked if he would have had a tilt at the outright lap record.

"But you need not the demo tyres and some proper tyres, which is not allowed.

"It's also risky to drive here, it just depends on how you hit a barrier. But that's normally not the plan, of course. But hopefully one day I can do it.

"Ideally, that would have been amazing in an F1 car, but if it's not allowed in an F1 car, then maybe one day in a GT3 car."
