A longtime NFL announcer could miss the 2023 season as he's working his way back from a stroke suffered early this year.
The Buffalo Bills went through the ordeal of having Damar Hamlin experience cardiac arrest during a game last season, but the safety isn't the only one in the organization who's dealt with such circumstances in 2023.
Team radio broadcaster John Murphy recently told Buffalo News via text he hasn't decided on whether he will return to the booth for the 2023 season after suffering a stroke late last term. Murphy suffered the stroke near the end of the season and, as it turned out, the first game he missed was the one between the Bills and Cincinnati Bengals in which Hamlin nearly lost his life.
"I'm going to wait until late July before I decide whether to come back. Still some recovery to do," the announcer explained.
Murphy, 68, has been the Bills' full-time broadcaster on the Buffalo Bills Radio Network since 2003, having worked in sports broadcasting since the 80s. He came in as a replacement for the legendary Van Miller, who had been the Bills' voice since the team was founded in 1960.
The New York native made it to the big screen in 2003 as well, playing himself in a cameo on Jim Carrey's Bruce Almighty.
He was inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters Association's Hall of Fame in 2019.
