A detached house in London now costs £1,090,210 on average - more than double the £530,460 figure for a home in the capital.

Such properties saw prices grow by 3.8 per cent in the first three months of the year, outpacing the London increase of 2.7 per cent.

It's a trend that has proved consistent since the financial crash. Detached homes have seen a price growth of 97 per cent since 2008, which is 18 per cent higher than the wider London average - though the figure is in line with semi-detached homes and only just ahead of terraces at 95 per cent. Growth in flats lags behind at 65 per cent.

While the difference in price between a detached house and similar property types has varied little in percentage terms, the cash difference has almost doubled, which puts the traditional trade-up well out of reach for most growing families.

Moving from a terraced house to a detached one now costs £512,720, compared to £258,550 fifteen years ago.

Clearly splendid isolation comes at a cost, though there are relative bargains to be had in clever builds and conversions that still keep the neighbours at arm's length. Here are ten of the best on the market now.
