Steam Update Makes Big Changes to the User Interface

Steam users will notice a new look with the latest update that was just released for the desktop client. In addition to the new look on the user interface, Valve stated that the latest Steam update looked to change a lot of things under the hood in order to improve performance on desktop, mobile, and the Steam Deck.

In a previous Steam update, Valve looked to improve the service's search functionality across the board when looking up a game or a developer. In that update, Valve stated that the changes were made after picking up on its audience's search trends on desktop and mobile. For example, searching for games per series will result in the top games in that franchise appearing first, along with its main hub on Steam where applicable. However, that was just the tip of the spear for Valve, as this latest update brings more.

The June 14 update for Steam will be seen right away after users update their clients. The Steam Library received a new font on the desktop, and the Notifications tab received a new look that mobile and Steam Deck users will be able to take advantage of as well. The downloads tab also received an upgrade, and now an icon for the game will appear on the bottom of the client alongside a download bar. In addition, Mac and Linux users will be able to turn on hardware acceleration in order to bring the Steam Desktop client in line with the Windows version.

In addition, the in-game overlay received an overhaul with a new look and some new features for desktop users. There is a new toolbar at the bottom of the screen where users can select widgets and adjust them to their liking. One of these widgets is the new Notes feature that was available in a Steam Beta client build. The notes can then be pinned into the overlay and appear on top of a game for easy reference, and are saved in the cloud, so users can keep track across multiple devices. Pins can also be used to place videos and browser pages on the game window for quick access. In addition to the new features and new fonts, some bug fixes were issued for the Steam client, including a bug fix that affected DualSense Edge controllers turning off.

Between the new Steam update and the imminent release of Counter-Strike 2, Valve is keeping busy this summer. Only time will tell what else the PC gaming giant has in store for Steam users in the future.
