Woolworths customers are 'furious' after an eagle-eyed shopper uncovered a surprising detail about the supermarket's brand new paper bags.

A man was recently putting his groceries away when he discovered that one of the 25c brown paper bags he purchased was smaller than the other.

The shopper displayed the 3.5cm difference in size in a video where he revealed that both bags had been purchased from the same store at the same time.

Thousands are upset by the 'shrinkflation' in action and believe the smaller size is to force customers to purchase extra bags.

'You can't help yourself. You just have to keep making products smaller and smaller, don't you?' the shopper said in the video.

The supermarket giant recently phased out their 15c reusable plastic bags in favour of using environmentally friendly options and reducing plastic waste.

Woolworths previously exclusively used the smaller bag to deliver online orders as the dimensions were designed to fit delivery crates.

However, the change now brings customers shopping in-store in line with the size of the bags online customers receive.

Many were nevertheless furious about the change and the shrunken size of the shopping bag.

'Paper bags were free 40 years ago - why do we have to pay for them now?' a man asked.

'I saved up all my plastic bags - I knew this was coming,' another added.

'Products don't even fit in these bags - are they going to bring in a food rationing or limiting system?' a man wrote.

'I guess we need smaller bags because we can't afford to fill a big one anyway,' a woman joked.

In a statement to Daily Mail Australia, a Woolworths spokesperson revealed that the changes were brought about for consistency across stores.

'We have recently changed the height of the paper shopping bags in our stores to match the paper bags we use for online deliveries.

'Many of our online orders are picked and packed in-store, so having one consistent size for all our paper bags helps simplify our processes.

'The updated paper bag is now 3.5cm shorter, representing a slight reduction in the bag's overall volume. It has been tested to ensure it will still carry the same weight of groceries.'
