In the past decade, the humble Mazda Miata has enjoyed a surge in popularity. Dozens of builds are pumped out and shown off on the internet daily, and these range from visually interesting to those that focus on performance. We've seen one that looks like a Ferrari Monza, while another build looks like a chrome-plated spaceship from The Jetsons.

So how does one set out to make a unique Miata nowadays? One guy from New Zealand named Chris Watson went for a Cyberpunk 2077-themed Miata, which borrows visual cues from the hyper-futuristic video game, animated TV series, and board game of the same name. But what does a first-generation Miata from the dystopian future look like?

Apparently, going widebody is where it's at. This is then coupled with a roof with a dorsal fin that appears to be similar to Le Man's hypercar prototypes like the Porsche 963 which makes it look like a stingray on wheels. What's impressive is the owner built the entire thing all by himself, and as of the latest video in his build series, is giving it a very in-depth LED treatment.

The builder, who also goes by the name Tofu Auto Works, didn't just give it a new set of taillights and be done with it. Instead, he meticulously shaped a 3D-looking light bar made out of a steel brace, and a couple pieces of polycarbonate. For this, he also had to temporarily remove the roof, which he likewise painted. He also covered the roof's louvers with polycarbonate strips.

As we've mentioned, though, the build's not yet done and is an ongoing process. Months ago, the Kiwi builder showed how he shaped the roof, as well as the car's custom widebody kits. So if you want to get more acquainted with this particular Miata, there are more videos for it on his channel. He even took it to the track at one point.

Watson also has other interesting builds that might catch your eye, such as the Nissan "Sta-GTR" build which is a JDM Nissan Stagea wagon with the face of a Nissan GT-R. He also made a more conservative-looking widebody Mazda Miata. Suffice it to say, Watson's an automotive body-building machine.
