The charge against a 23-year-old man accused of running down Perth police officer Anthony Woods has been upgraded to murder.

Constable Woods died on Sunday night after being dragged under a car last week, following a police pursuit in the Perth suburb of Ascot.

Reagan Ainsley Chown was originally charged with doing an act to prevent arrest that caused grievous bodily harm, but today police said the charge had been upgraded to murder.

Mr Chown is due to face Perth Magistrates Court via video link from Hakea Prison this morning, but he will not be required to plead.

Bail will not be considered because murder is the most serious offence and only a Supreme Court judge can approve bail after a formal application is made and there is a full public hearing.

Mr Chown is alleged to have been behind the wheel of the car that ran over Constable Woods about 1am on Thursday, June 8.

The car had been stopped by police because it was allegedly bearing stolen number plates.

As Constable Woods and his colleague tried to detain its three occupants, he was dragged underneath the vehicle and pinned.

His colleagues had to lift the car off him and perform CPR before he was rushed to hospital suffering critical injuries.

His family made the decision to turn off his life support on Sunday night.

The other two people who were in the vehicle and detained at the scene - a 20-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man - were released by police pending further investigations.

Commissioner Col Blanch yesterday paid tribute to Constable Woods whom he described as "a brave and dedicated police officer."

He described the young officer as an all-rounder and someone who loved to joke around with his friends and colleagues.

"You did your duty mate. We will remember."

Constable Woods's wife Emily and his family released a statement paying tribute to him.

"We are shattered to lose our dear Anthony. He was a devoted husband and loving son, brother, and uncle who was taken from this earth far too soon," the statement read.

"Anthony will be remembered as a funny, hard-working man who loved the West Coast Eagles and mucking around with his mates.

"He brought light and laughter to every situation, and his wicked sense of humour is irreplaceable.

"Our pain at this time is indescribable, and we take comfort in the outpouring of love from the community."
